The Bethlehem pretreatment program has just under 40 industries within the 11 municipalities that it serves.  Notable industries in Bethlehem’s program include Just Born®, Freshpet®, Crayola®, and Gregory Packaging, Inc.. The Bethlehem WWTP serves the City and 11 contributing municipalities (~135,000 people).  The plant was originally built in 1952, had a major upgrade in 1976 (secondary treatment), and is currently undergoing another major upgrade. The Bethlehem wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) operates in accordance with an NPDES Permit issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP), with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Delaware River Basin Commission (DRBC).  The plant has a 20 million-gallon per day (MGD) capacity and discharges to the Lehigh River.

Historical Bethlehem is the central city among the three cities of the Lehigh Valley.  Known as Christmas City, USA, Bethlehem was founded by Moravian settlers in 1741.  It quickly became a city of industry housing Bethlehem Steel, which was the second-largest steel company in the country until its bankruptcy in 2001.  Today, Bethlehem draws a robust amount of travelers who come to tour its six National Register Historic Districts, many historic sites and museums, and it’s very active arts and culture scene that is home to Musikfest, the nation’s largest free music festival and Christkindlmrkt, which was twice voted as one of the best holiday markets in the U.S. by Travel and Leisure Magazine.  Home to over 75,000 people, Bethlehem has been listed as one of the 100 Best Places to live in the US according to Money Magazine.
